South Africans expressed surprise on social media when James Sithole, the actor behind the character Mdala on “#eTvScandal!”, revealed that he speaks ten languages.
Growing up in a family where no one was particularly fluent in a language, the predominant tongue at home was Pedi.
Originally from Kwa-Ndebele in Mpumalanga, Sithole never envisioned a career in acting. In Grade 1, he aspired to be a policeman or a soldier, but his path took a fortuitous turn. “I joined a youth development group for athletics,” Sithole explained. “I wanted to participate in events like the 100 and 200 meters. One day, when our athletics instructor was absent, I ended up in an acting and music class. That’s when I discovered my passion for acting, and I knew that’s where I belonged.”
After completing his matriculation, Sithole enrolled in the South African State Theatre in Pretoria. His love for languages motivated him to study linguistics, as he aimed to become a translator. “I pursued language studies because I wanted to be an interpreter. It seemed like a reliable backup plan. I used to interpret at church, which fueled my desire to learn multiple languages. I can confidently say I know all the official languages except Afrikaans, and I’m currently learning Swahili and sign language.”
Sithole later moved to Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, where he continued to nurture his passion for acting, as well as writing and directing at the South African State Theatre. In 2014, he participated in a 10-month performing arts program called Triple, where he honed his skills in drama, music, and dance. Within just four months, he landed his first professional role in a play called “Hungry,” followed by a musical in “Marikana.”
Reflecting on his early success, Sithole recalls, “After being cast in prominent productions, I told myself, ‘this is where I want to be.’ That led me to start my own company, Blankpage Entertainment, focusing on creative projects. Since then, I’ve never looked back.”
Sithole’s perseverance has paid off, particularly with his role in the popular TV series “Scandal!” Although he initially struggled to gain mainstream recognition, his remarkable acting talent has since brought him into the limelight. However, portraying a complex character has not come without its challenges.
Some viewers mistakenly conflate his on-screen persona with his true character, leading to misunderstandings about his actions in real life. Nonetheless, Sithole’s dedication to his craft continues to demonstrate his versatility and earn the recognition he rightfully deserves.
